Gastronomic Bridge

A Manifesto for Multidisciplinary Conversations in Gastronomic Sciences and Studies

The International Society for Gastronomic Sciences and Studies (ISGSS) is anchored in the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge and is deeply committed to uncovering the multifaceted relationship between humans and our culinary practices while striving to promote food sustainability, sovereignty, and justice.

Our collective curiosity converges on all facets of food and food systems, with a keen emphasis on sustainability, approached from a tableau of diverse cultural vantage points. To navigate the rich complexity of gastronomic discourses, we acknowledge the necessity for a lingua franca that not only dismantles barriers between disciplines but also diversifies our collective interpretations and worldviews. We thus endeavor to foster an open platform on which critical dissections of profound, food-related sustainability issues may thrive.

ISGSS serves as an architectural space for the construction of robust multidisciplinary bridges. We champion a perpetual exchange between local and academic knowledge, intertwining expertise from an array of natural and social scientific disciplines. An amalgamation of local and academic wisdom, we believe, holds the potential to revolutionize our collective understanding of food systems. Our society is a paragon of inclusivity, welcoming scholars, indigenous community members, and fervently committed environmental and food activists on our quest to explore and implement sustainability-oriented food science, culture, and policy frameworks built around local resources. We embrace global perspectives, seamlessly integrating insights from the Global North and South, the East and West, and urban and rural demographics.

Our scholarly pursuit is particularly drawn to the exploration of food-centered social sciences, including, but not limited to, agri-food and sensory sciences, food-related cultural studies, food philosophy and history, food ecology, food psychology, as well as innovative technologies and policies within the gastronomic universe. The privilege lies squarely with us to navigate community-centric methodologies, weaving together analyses of food, cultural heritage and bioscientific aspects.

Envisioning a concrete platform concentrated on initiatives with transformative potential for existing food systems, ISGSS aims to superintend the birth of innovative methodologies and meta-languages accessible to society at large. Such a platform will facilitate the sharing of knowledge and forge fresh avenues for cross-disciplinary research, steadfastly aiding both established and emerging scholars in their gastronomic pursuits.
